Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Li Mengqing’s Home
"Gonna get your kidneys!"
Lin Wanyu grinned mischievously, her hand creeping toward Gao Yuan’s waist.
As they wrestled playfully, the tables soon turned, and Gao Yuan found himself on top.
No, that’s not right. To be precise, Lin Wanyu had taken the initiative.
She grabbed Gao Yuan’s favorite stuffed cow from the bed, placed it under her knees, and began grinding it against the floor.
When Gao Yuan saw Lin Wanyu defiling his beloved cow like that, he grabbed her by the head and began rocking it back and forth...
"CLICK!"
The front door suddenly clicked open. Li Mengqing was back.
The two of them tensed up instantly.
But the thrilling tension of the moment only made Gao Yuan more excited.
Only after Lin Wanyu muffled a few pleas for mercy and agreed to a host of one-sided terms did Gao Yuan finally let her go.
The two of them left the guest room.
Gao Yuan put on a serious face and went to the kitchen to pour a glass of water, trying to calm his racing heart. Meanwhile, Lin Wanyu pulled Li Mengqing over to show her the freshly cleaned guest room.
Li Mengqing had already noticed Lin Wanyu’s messy hair and was about to ask about it, but upon entering the room, she caught a strange scent.
"What were you two doing?"
"Cleaning!"
"Cleaning? Then why is your hair a mess?"
"And why are you blushing..."
Faced with Li Mengqing’s barrage of questions, Lin Wanyu couldn’t hold her ground and simply pulled her out of the guest room again.
"Oh, why all the questions? We need to go help you move now."
At the mention of moving, Li Mengqing stopped her interrogation and looked over at Gao Yuan. "So, should we head over now?"
"Let’s go, let’s go!"
Eager to escape the awkward situation, Lin Wanyu shot Gao Yuan a look and then pulled Li Mengqing out the door.
Li Mengqing lived in Building 20, on the 26th floor, in a spacious 330-square-meter, three-bedroom apartment.
The moment Gao Yuan walked in, he realized this apartment was far more impressive than the one he was renting. The living room alone was twice the size of his.
"You keep your place really clean!"
Li Mengqing looked disdainful. "My home is always clean, okay? I’m not lazy like a certain someone."
As she spoke, she glanced pointedly at Lin Wanyu.
Gao Yuan nodded. Li Mengqing certainly didn’t seem like a slob.
He walked over to the sofa and sat down. When he saw that a cushion was out of place, he moved to fix it and discovered a piece of black fabric tucked underneath.
"What’s this?"
Without much thought, he gave it a tug. A palm-sized piece of black lace fabric appeared before his eyes.
Gao Yuan froze!
How could he not recognize what this was?!
Li Mengqing, who was in the middle of a conversation with Lin Wanyu, heard Gao Yuan’s question. She turned her head just in time to see him holding a black thong.
Her face instantly flushed beet red.
Flustered, she scrambled over to Gao Yuan, snatched the thong from his hand, and shoved it into her pocket.
"What was that?"
Her only reply was to roll her eyes at him.
Just then, Lin Wanyu walked over. "What are you two talking about?"
Gao Yuan shot Li Mengqing a teasing smile. "Nothing. I just like this sofa a lot and was asking Sister Qing where she bought it."
After that little incident, Li Mengqing lost the mood for small talk with Lin Wanyu. She paced around the living room once before retreating to her bedroom to start packing her things.
Gao Yuan had intended to go in and help, but Li Mengqing, that woman, was having none of it and shut the door on him.
With nothing better to do, Gao Yuan wandered around the apartment, taking it all in.
Li Mengqing’s apartment was truly impressive. From any angle, it was several classes above his rental.
Over 300 square meters... it must be worth over twenty million!
With all the furnishings, the total value was probably closer to thirty million.
’How many face masks would I have to sell to earn enough for this apartment?!’
’Li Mengqing’s family must really dote on her!’
’Back in my hometown, you wouldn’t find many parents willing to buy such an expensive apartment for their daughter. The preference for boys over girls is still pretty strong there.’
He remembered how Li Mengqing had asked him if he’d be willing to marry into her family when they first met. For the first time, Gao Yuan was actually tempted.
’Maybe being a live-in husband wouldn’t be so bad after all.’
...
An hour or so later, Gao Yuan stared, slightly dazed, at the five large storage bins arranged in the living room.
"You have this much stuff?"
"You should just bring your clothes and things like that. We have everything else."
Li Mengqing looked at Gao Yuan and nodded.
"Since you know, get to it. Leave behind anything that isn’t essential."
"This is all clothes..."
Li Mengqing looked a little sheepish. She had spent the better part of the afternoon in her bedroom just folding clothes.
And that was even after she’d thrown out a good number of her summer clothes; otherwise, there might have been two more bins.
Gao Yuan was speechless.
He’d seen those skits online where a woman complains she has nothing to wear, only for her husband to gather all her clothes and bury her in the resulting mountain of fabric. He had always assumed it was just an exaggeration for the camera.
He never expected to see it happen in real life.
He looked at all the clothes and couldn’t help glancing over at Lin Wanyu. ’Is she like this too?’
"What are you looking at? Get ready to move it! Are you expecting us to do all the work?"
Lin Wanyu felt a pang of guilt under Gao Yuan’s gaze.
Truthfully, Li Mengqing’s pile of clothes was nothing compared to hers. She probably had more than double this amount.
Of course, Gao Yuan had no intention of doing the heavy lifting himself. He could probably move all the bins in a few trips, but it would be exhausting.
Instead, Gao Yuan took out his phone and dialed the building’s concierge. "Could you arrange for a few people to help me move some things?"
"Five storage bins full of clothes."
"Great. Building 20, apartment 2601."
Hanging up, Gao Yuan waved his phone at the two women. "Done!"
This was one of the perks for residents at No.1 Courtyard. The property management was incredibly professional, and you could ask for their help with many of life’s little hassles. Of course, Gao Yuan had no intention of letting them help for free.
After the property management staff carried the five bins to his apartment, Gao Yuan immediately pulled out a carton of cigarettes and handed it to them.
It was a carton of Su Yan cigarettes. It was the brand Gao Yuan usually smoked—not top-shelf, but not cheap either.
It was a token of appreciation, and the men accepted it without protest, clearly having had similar experiences before.
While the two women went to sort out the closet space and organize the room, Gao Yuan stepped out onto the balcony for a smoke.
When the delivery courier he’d ordered arrived with groceries and fruit, he instantly transformed into a chef.
After a week-long trial by fire of making three meals a day, his "Basic Culinary Arts" mission was already 81% complete. He believed that if he just kept it up a little longer, he could collect the 5 experience points.
As for the "Culinary Mastery (All Cuisines)" reward, he wasn’t as fussed about it.
In his experience, as long as he had a recipe, he could make almost anything. The result might be a little shy of a professional chef’s, but it was no big deal.
Getting that reward would just be icing on the cake, which was why he was more focused on those 5 experience points.
However, he was still a long way from leveling up his system to the third level.
He was a full 44 experience points short. Judging by the system’s pattern of issuing missions, he’d need to complete at least another five to ten of them to accumulate enough EXP.
’It’s going to be tough!’
’If I want to have money in my pocket, I’ll have to keep pinning my hopes on those skincare products.’
Even as these thoughts raced through his mind, Gao Yuan’s hands never stopped moving.
For lunch today, he was going to make them his hometown’s specialty: braised noodles. It was a signature dish of his, and he made it just as well as any restaurant.
Besides, he’d tried the braised noodles at plenty of restaurants in Hang City, and they were honestly pretty bad.
He used to think that if he really couldn’t make a living, he could always open a small restaurant and support himself.
After putting the noodles on to steam and stir-frying the vegetables, Gao Yuan sat at the dining table scrolling through short videos while he waited for the noodles to cook.
Lin Wanyu and Li Mengqing, having finished organizing the room, walked over.
Lin Wanyu nonchalantly draped an arm around Gao Yuan’s neck, plucked a strawberry from its container, and popped it into her mouth. By the time Gao Yuan reacted, she had already placed the leafy green top on the table.
Gao Yuan put down his phone and gave Lin Wanyu a stern look. "Those strawberries haven’t been washed yet!"
"You’re being mean to me!"
"Darling... don’t you love me anymore?"
