The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First

Chapter 233: Biodiversity

A sly smile curled her lips. With a mere thought, she casually stored three or four mutated snails of similar size from the roadside into her space.

Right then, the urgent SCREECH of brakes echoed from the front three or four times. Dylan DuPont’s steady voice immediately rang out from the walkie-talkie. “Attention all vehicles. The car bodies are covered with mutated animals attached to them. Stop temporarily to clean up and set off on time in fifteen minutes.”

Upon hearing this, Aaron Palmer steadily stepped on the brakes, bringing the car to a slow halt. Everyone leaned back in their seats, patiently waiting for the cleanup order.

The entire convoy quickly came to an orderly stop, maintaining a distance of five to six meters between each vehicle.

People in raincoats stepped out of each car one after another. They carefully cleaned off the various mutated mollusks clinging to the walls, wheels, and undersides of the vehicles. Their movements were swift yet cautious, terrified of getting entangled with the slimy creatures.

Luna Dawson looked at Little Sweet Potato, who was peering around from Aaron’s arms. She smiled and instructed, “Little Sweet Potato, tie up these snails and use them to wipe the windows.”

As soon as she spoke, CLUNK CLUNK—the four mutated snails she had stored in her space were released. They landed securely on the hood, still wriggling sluggishly.

“You got it!”

Little Sweet Potato chirped happily. Its leaves gave a gentle shake before it slipped out through the crack in the window. It extended a few flexible vines, wrapping them around the shells of the four snails. Pressing them firmly against the Marauder’s front, rear, left, and right windows, it slowly manipulated the snails to rub back and forth.

A moment later, a miracle occurred.

The windows were wiped crystal clear, rivaling the effects of top-tier windshield washer fluid. They were so clean that even raindrops hitting the glass slid right off, doing the splits as they went, leaving no trace behind.

“Damn! You’re a genius, sis!” Miles Dawson leaned close to the window and touched it. The surface was impeccably smooth, devoid of a single speck of dirt. He couldn’t help but marvel, “These snails are so pitiful. Even after mutating, they still get caught to do odd jobs for you! Looking outside now, the whole world is in high definition!”

Following behind their vehicle, Yvonne Ford and Shaun Barnes happened to witness the Sunset Squad enslaving the snails to wash their windows. They couldn’t hold back and let out a PFFT of laughter.

Shaun scratched his head and looked at Yvonne in innocent bewilderment. “Yvonne, should we give it a try too? Maybe it actually does something.”

Yvonne had been manipulating her thorny vines to rip the mutated snails off the roof and windows, just about to toss them to the roadside. Hearing this, her eyes lit up. She immediately changed her mind, keeping a few similarly sized snails. Mimicking Luna’s group, she controlled her vines to press them against the windows, rubbing them slowly.

The rain was still pattering down. As the snails wriggled and rubbed back and forth across the glass, the wiped areas became incredibly bright and clear. Even the rainwater couldn’t cling to it. In an instant, the car windows were as clean as if a high-definition filter had been applied!

Seth Scott pressed his face close to the glass, his eyes wide as saucers, and his tone full of astonishment. “Holy crap! What kind of god-tier special effect is this? Yvonne, hurry up and wipe all the windows!”

The others in the car also looked over in sheer amazement.

Shaun reached out and touched the mirror-smooth window, unable to help but sigh in admiration. “These mutated snails are way too practical! They work better than specialized glass cleaning tools. We won’t have to bust a gut cleaning the windows anymore!”

When out on missions, it was inevitable for the vehicles to get splattered with the bodily fluids of mutated creatures. Some of the mucus was so unique that cleaning it off completely was incredibly difficult. Finding a professional car wash inside the base also cost a fortune in points. Now, everyone was absolutely thrilled!

Slanted streaks of rain pelted the windows, blurring the view outside, yet the glass on Luna’s Marauder was dazzlingly bright!

Four basketball-sized snails had their shells bound by Little Sweet Potato’s vines. Like four living squeegees, they were pressed against the windows, scrubbing from side to side.

Aaron pressed his face against the glass. He could see even the tiniest flowers and fruits outside with crystal clarity. “This snail mucus is a hundred times better than special windshield washer fluid! We don’t even need to stock up on washer fluid anymore; we can just catch snails and put them to work!”

Miles was equally amazed. “Can we keep these things as pets?”

Little Sweet Potato smugly swayed its vines and purposely shoved a snail toward Miles’s face, scaring him into shrinking back. “No, no, no! This thing is slimy as hell. If it rubs on my face, I’ll have to wash it eight times!”

Luna laughed and patted Little Sweet Potato’s vine. “Stop messing around. I’ll store a few in my space to keep. I can use them to wipe the windows at home when we get back.”

Just as she finished speaking, laughter erupted from Yvonne’s group in the car behind them, followed by Seth’s boisterous shouting. “Yvonne! This is incredible! These snails are absolute post-apocalyptic treasures!”

Everyone cast a glance backward. They saw Yvonne manipulating her thorns, having bundled up a few large snails of her own. She was mimicking Little Sweet Potato, scrubbing them across her car windows.

Seeing this, the people in the other cars quickly followed suit. For a moment, the entire convoy was filled with a chorus of SWISH SWISH as everyone wiped their glass, occasionally mixed with the startled cries of the squad members.

“Holy crap! Look at this!”

“Hurry! Yank the ones off the roof too and use them on the rearview mirrors!”

“Grab that small one to wipe!”

The initially chaotic cleanup scene had actually become lively and comical because of a few snails, significantly easing the previously tense atmosphere.

Clayton Churchill caught a glimpse of Luna’s car through the rearview mirror. Looking at the bizarre yet hilarious sight of dancing vines wrapping around heavy snails to wash windows, the corner of his mouth twitched uncontrollably. His tone carried a hint of helplessness. “The Sunset Squad seems to be in good spirits. Every time we go on a mission, they’re always the most joyful.”

Sitting in the passenger seat of the same car, Dylan DuPont maintained a calm expression. Sweeping his gaze over the rearview mirror, he slowly said, “Regulating emotions during a mission is inherently important. Besides, these mutated snails truly aren’t aggressive. There’s no harm in using them to relieve boredom.”

After Dylan finished speaking, he reached out to take a small snail handed to him by a team member standing outside the car. Surprisingly, he took a keen interest in it and started using it to wipe his own rearview mirror, his movements revealing a rare touch of casualness.

Sitting nearby with his eyes closed to rest, Kyle Keith slowly opened them. He turned his head toward the cars behind them, a gentle smile blossoming on his face as he spoke softly. “Yeah, their squad is truly full of life.”

Fifteen minutes passed in a flash. Dylan’s steady voice came through the car’s walkie-talkie right on time. “Cleanup is complete. All vehicles, check your condition and prepare to set off!”

Aaron immediately shifted gears and stepped on the gas. The Marauder started up steadily, merging back into the convoy. Its wheels rolled over the puddles on the road, splashing white water half a meter into the air.

Having finished washing the windows, Little Sweet Potato used a vine to turn on the car stereo. Then, curling around the rearview mirror, it leisurely swung back and forth. Its leaves occasionally wiggled to the rhythm of the music. With its carefree demeanor, it looked more relaxed than anyone else in the car.

Rhonda Dawson leaned back in her seat, holding her smart wristband and focusing intently on browsing the information displayed, her fingers occasionally tapping the screen.

Being naturally prone to motion sickness, Luna watched this scene with a heart full of envy.

She truly admired those who could comfortably watch videos and scroll through news while riding in a car. Although she wouldn’t get so car sick that she’d vomit, the moment she stared at a screen, she would suffer from dizziness and feel awful all over.
