The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First

Chapter 234: Water Element

Looking at Rhonda Dawson’s calm demeanor, Luna Dawson couldn’t help but grumble, “Just what kind of genes did I inherit? Neither you nor Miles Dawson gets carsick. It’s only me, and it’s so annoying!”

Rhonda Dawson put down her bracelet, looking with amusement at the dazed and aggrieved Luna Dawson. She comforted her softly, “It’s completely fair. Look at your superpower talent now; it’s higher than all of ours. Think of this as a kind of compensation.”

Luna Dawson curled her lip. She thought, “What talent? I’m entirely relying on my spatial pocket as a cheat code. Otherwise, I’d still be the most ordinary of ordinary people.”

Kevin Keane and Blake Blue were huddled together, looking at an official news update on their bracelets. Blake Blue spoke first, his tone carrying a bit of anticipation, “The Military Command and the research institute are joining forces to develop new weapons and aircraft using Crystal Cores as power sources. Word is they’ve already made initial progress. At this rate, people who haven’t awakened superpowers will also be able to participate in battles against High Order mutated creatures in the future!”

Kevin Keane’s tone grew a bit heavier. “That’s for the best. Many people in the Military Command haven’t been able to awaken superpowers. If they don’t start researching in this direction, regular firearms will only grow weaker as zombies continuously upgrade. If that happens, we’ll be in huge trouble.”

On the other side, Rhonda Dawson was attracted by another piece of news. She muttered softly, “To think that Kyle Keith is actually Elder Kessler’s son. I saw Elder Kessler give a speech at the award ceremony last time, and only now do I realize how similar the two of them look. The notice for the base’s subway reconstruction project is out, and the Kessler Family is still taking full charge of it.”

Hearing this, Kevin Keane said calmly, “People are complicated. If Kieran Keith could secure his position as the mayor before the apocalypse, he naturally has his skills. The base is indeed steadily developing for the better. I just hope no one stirs up any unexpected trouble.”

He paused, looking at Luna Dawson sitting opposite him, and after a moment of hesitation, asked, “Little boss, have you seen the research institute’s latest report on the Water Ability?”

Luna Dawson slowly opened her heavy eyes and nodded. “Yeah, I saw it last night. It’s really strange… Is the Water Ability truly that special?”

In her past life, Water Ability Users were just ordinary Superpower Users. There were both men and women, and there was nothing special about them. But in this life, for some unknown reason, everyone who awakened the Water Ability was female.

No wonder when she went to help at the water plant before, even though she only stayed for half an hour each time, all the Superpower Users she encountered going in and out of the plant were women. At the time, she thought it was just a coincidence and didn’t take it to heart.

It wasn’t until yesterday, when a video titled “Is the Water Ability Exclusive to Women?” was published, that this bizarre fact was completely exposed. They had met quite a few Superpower Users in this life, and only in hindsight did they realize that they truly hadn’t seen a single male Water Ability User.

Even at the end, that report couldn’t provide a reasonable explanation. Yet, a faint trace of unease rippled in Luna Dawson’s heart.

Blake Blue looked at Luna Dawson’s slightly furrowed brows. He reached out to rub the rump of Rollo, who was lying by his legs, and softly advised, “Kevin, why bring this up? Have faith that the base will make proper arrangements.”

Kevin Keane fell silent for a moment before speaking slowly, “I’m just a little uneasy…”

There were too many secrets surrounding Luna Dawson, and her special traits were being exposed one by one. The more she was exposed, the greater the danger she faced. At the end of the day, their Sunset Squad still wasn’t strong enough. They weren’t strong enough to completely protect her.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Miles Dawson seemed to have been poked in a sore spot. He jumped up suddenly, his tone agitated. “So what if they’re all women?! If the research institute dares to target Water Ability Users and give my sister a hard time, I’ll blow that crappy institute to ruins even if I have to self-destruct!”

As soon as he said this, Rhonda Dawson was so frightened that she immediately grabbed Luna Dawson’s hand tightly. She looked nervous, as if people from the research institute were going to chase after them in the very next second.

Aaron Palmer rolled his eyes dramatically and retorted helplessly, “Miles, can you not blow up at the slightest provocation? All other superpowers have both men and women. Since the Water Ability is entirely female, it’s perfectly normal for the higher-ups to single it out for research to figure out the reason. Stop letting your imagination run wild.”

Looking at everyone’s tense expressions, Luna Dawson couldn’t help but smile. She gently patted Rhonda Dawson’s hand and reassured them, “It’s fine, don’t be nervous. There are already hundreds of Water Ability Users in the base now. The base just wants to solve this mystery; nothing bad should happen.”

Blake Blue comforted everyone, “There are so many bizarre things nowadays that the research institute couldn’t possibly study them all even if they rushed. Don’t worry. Right now, they have to prioritize solving the food problem for millions of people. No matter how you look at it, the anomaly of hundreds of all-female Water Ability Users just isn’t that urgent.”

With those words, everyone immediately relaxed, and Rhonda Dawson nodded repeatedly.

For the rest of the journey, everyone energetically switched their chatterbox modes back on. Along the way, they talked non-stop, complaining about all the weird creatures in the mutated circle, making the drive far less boring.

Aaron Palmer said with disgust, “The mucus that mutated toad spat out just now was like glue. It was super annoying! I almost lost my mind!”

Miles Dawson immediately chimed in, “Don’t even mention it! My leg almost got stuck in that stuff. Thank goodness Brother Kevin was quick to act, or I would have had to wrestle with it!”

“Compared to that toad, the zombies in the rain today were way more disgusting. They were soaked pale, and their wounds were curled at the edges like rotten cabbage leaves.”

Rhonda Dawson shivered in disgust. Even though the apocalypse had been going on for over half a year, she still couldn’t quite get used to those eye-searing corpses.

Miles Dawson looked thoroughly smug. “Hey, they were all small fry below the Third Order. They practically served up their heads to give us free experience. It wasn’t even enough for a warm-up!”

The journey had indeed been absurdly smooth. Several waves of drenched zombies had charged at them, but they were instantly killed the moment they approached the convoy. They didn’t even have the qualifications to cause the group any trouble.

The sky remained oppressively gloomy. The drizzling rain hadn’t stopped at all, hitting the car windows with a soft PIT-A-PAT. The entire urban forest was pitch black, so dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. Only the headlights of their convoy pierced through the misty curtain of rain, becoming the sole remaining light of human civilization as they drove steadily toward the pharmaceutical factory.

It was past eight in the evening when the convoy stopped a few kilometers away from the old city district. The drifting drizzle felt slightly cool on their faces, and they didn’t dare to venture any deeper.

Dylan DuPont pulled out a blue signal flare and shot it into the sky with a sharp WHOOSH. The light pierced through the drizzling rain and tore across the pitch-black night sky, glaringly bright, before being softened a moment later by the fine drizzle.

Kevin Keane leaned against the car window. “Omni Squads Four and Five, along with three other squads from the base, came here earlier. The last distress signal was sent from somewhere nearby. Even if communications are cut off, if there are any survivors left in the squads, they’ll respond the moment they see the flare.”

The convoy immediately turned off its headlights and waited in silence.

One minute, ten minutes, half an hour passed… In the pitch-black night sky, aside from the patter of the rain and the RUSTLE of the wind blowing through the leaves, there wasn’t a single sign of a response. The heavy silence added another layer of oppression to the gloomy atmosphere.
