Interstellar Era: Starting As a Cleaner

Chapter 104: Are Mutants Also Alliance Citizens?

Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Are Mutants Also Alliance Citizens?

Yang Bo was quite surprised. The female officer’s personal equipment actually contained a map! If she had brought it out earlier, he wouldn’t have run all this way for nothing.

"It’s a bit far." Yang Bo studied the map. The straight-line distance alone was over 1,000 kilometers. However, traveling straight through the tall grass was definitely out of the question—who knew how many Mutants were hiding in there? He decided to follow the mountain range, but that would mean taking a curved path, extending the journey to nearly 4,000 kilometers.

"It’s still better to walk along the border of the mountains and the prairie." Yang Bo ultimately chose the detour. The prairie greatly obstructed vision. The Mecha’s radar wasn’t functioning very well right now, and if his vision was compromised on top of that, he’d be in trouble. If he was targeted by the Mutants’ Biological Mechas, he might not be able to win. Of course, it wouldn’t really matter for him personally.

The officer behind him was still there. Naturally, even if she died, Yang Bo wouldn’t be afraid, because he was currently using someone else’s identity, not his own.

Controlling the Battle Armor, Yang Bo immediately began moving along the border of the mountains and the prairie.

The female officer in the Mecha’s cockpit was a little stunned. Didn’t this low-ranking soldier know to ask for instructions before acting? After all, she had an exceptional memory, and there were still many things he didn’t know.

However, since this soldier wasn’t under the direct command of her Fleet, she found it hard to say anything. She simply waited as Yang Bo piloted the Mecha. Furthermore, she got the feeling that Yang Bo had some specific business at Sentry Base 16. Otherwise, why wouldn’t he ask her where Sentry Base 17 or 18 was? Sentry Base 17 was less than 500 kilometers away, merely hidden behind the mountain range and out of sight.

But the female officer kept quiet. The information she had previously memorized was now useless. The so-called safe zones from before might now be crawling with Mutants.

Yang Bo maneuvering the Mecha along the border of the mountains and the prairie had long been spotted. However, it was impossible for a single Mutant to take on a Mecha. Right now, many Mutants were busy attacking the outposts. They had already occupied sections of the bases and reaped a bountiful harvest.

The Tiger-faced King had also participated in this attack, leading the first wave.

After he led his initial wave to occupy the outer perimeter of an outpost and loot a batch of supplies, he returned to his tribe to prepare for a second raid. However, upon reaching the entrance of the Underground World, he saw rows of Warplanes in the sky and didn’t dare to venture out again.

"What are these Pirates even good for? How long has it been, and they’ve already run away?" Looking at the Alliance Warships in the sky, the Tiger-faced King was furious.

After all, the various Mutant tribes had united and paid a hefty price to hire the Pirate Alliance Fleet to attack the Planet Fleet and destroy the planet’s orbital warning system. The Mutants had even signed a cooperation agreement with the Pirates: once the Alliance forces were wiped out, they would form a joint administrative organization to rule this planet and resist the Alliance together. They had even reached a secret agreement with another nation.

Having only managed to loot a single wave of supplies, the Tiger-faced King was naturally enraged. The rare materials he had paid were far more valuable than the supplies he had stolen back!

"Your Majesty, I said from the start that we shouldn’t trust the Pirates, but some people insisted on believing them," one of the Tiger-faced King’s subordinates said, shaking his head. "Who knows, maybe those Pirates even colluded with the Alliance to set us up! The Pirates and those Alliance conglomerates are inextricably linked. Without the backing of those Alliance financial groups, how could the Pirates possibly acquire Warships? How could they get Mechas?"

The Tiger-faced King’s expression darkened. His subordinate made sense. Pirates obviously had no credibility. Of course, the Mutants had no other choice but to cooperate with them.

"Your Majesty, we’re actually doing alright," another subordinate chimed in. "We were closest to the outpost, so we managed to grab a haul during the chaos. Although we suffered some casualties, compared to those tribes further away, they must have taken heavy losses."

"Your Majesty, look at those Lasers striking our neighbors. Doesn’t that make you feel a bit better?"

"Don’t be angry, Your Majesty," his subordinates took turns comforting him. "This is just what happens when you deal with Pirates. It’s just that some idiots in the other tribes actually believed the Pirates would genuinely cooperate with us. Well, look at them now! I wonder what those fools who cooperated so deeply with the Pirates are thinking right now as they face this barrage of Lasers!"

The Tiger-faced King’s eyes darted around, and he immediately ordered, "Send out all the Reconnaissance animals."

"Which outpost are we keeping an eye on, Your Majesty? Sentry Base 16 or 17?" the subordinate in charge of the animals asked promptly.

"Are you an idiot? Human Warships are flying right above us! Of course, we’re keeping an eye on our neighbors to see which of them return with fewer men. Those bastards talked a big game when they contacted the Pirates. I have to at least recoup my initial investment!" The Tiger-faced King was not one to take a loss. Recently, two of his neighboring leaders had ended up dead and severely injured respectively, allowing his tribe’s population to expand significantly. Now that his neighbors had likely suffered heavy casualties, how could he pass up the chance to pay them a little "visit"?

"Your Majesty is wise! There are many automated Weapon systems inside those outposts, and since they are situated in areas without underground entrances, our neighbors must have suffered massively!"

"Your Majesty, why don’t we just raid them right now?" another subordinate boldly suggested. "It looks like our neighbors are still attacking the outpost. Look at all those Alliance Warplanes swarming over Sentry Base 15. It won’t be easy for our neighbors to retreat. We should just march right up to their doorstep and rob them!"

"Let’s do it!" The Tiger-faced King agreed, finding the reasoning sound. Looking at the numerous Alliance Warplanes over at Sentry Base 15 and the continuous streams of Lasers firing from the Warships above, he knew his neighbors were having a very hard time!

Leading his subordinates, the Tiger-faced King headed straight back to the Underground World. From there, they traveled through the subterranean tunnels toward their neighbors’ territory. Robbing the Alliance was hard, but robbing their neighbors was practically a sure thing.

Meanwhile, inside the Mecha, Yang Bo finally learned what Mutants actually were.

"Mutants used to be Alliance citizens too—the very pioneers who developed this planet," the female officer explained as she sat behind Yang Bo. "When this planet was first discovered, no one realized that these Mutant Animals were the best materials for making Genetic Potions. In the past, Genetic Potions were all extracted from human bodies.

"After consuming the Mutated Beasts of this planet, these citizens discovered they had acquired powerful Superpowers. This news spread rapidly, prompting major Alliance organizations to send people to this planet in droves. By the time the Alliance Army reacted, an untold number of people had already arrived.

"Because they directly consumed Mutated Beasts, Mutants all carry some beast genes, though there are exceptions. This means there is still an unknown number of Mutants hidden within the Alliance. It’s also why there are Laser Cannons everywhere inside the Warships—there have been incidents of Mutants hijacking and sabotaging Warships in the past!"

As she spoke, the female officer inwardly wondered if this low-ranking soldier might be a Mutant too.

"Furthermore, many families and organizations have inextricable ties to the Mutants on this planet," she added. "Those organizations operating in the gray areas and black markets, and even the mega-corporations, all have connections here."

Hearing these explanations, Yang Bo understood, but he felt even more uneasy. Why was this female officer telling him all this? Had she seen through his Disguise? Should he just kill her? Everything was in chaos right now anyway.

"Could our boss’s company also have connections on this planet?" Yang Bo wondered.
