Chapter 105: Chapter 105: Departure
While the female officer spoke, she was actually paying close attention to Yang Bo’s mental fluctuations. Finding nothing unusual about him, she grew even more curious. She wondered who this person really was and if he was truly a mutant.
How many mutants were actually in the Alliance? No one knew. Since some mutants appeared completely normal and didn’t exhibit any beast-like traits, it was impossible to identify them.
Yang Bo piloted the mecha along the mountain range. The journey was supposed to be peaceful. Even if mutants occasionally spotted his mecha, they wouldn’t dare approach it. The sky was swarming with Alliance warplanes, and the moment a fight broke out, those warplanes would arrive in an instant.
However, someone else thought differently. A neighboring tribe of the Tiger-faced King, located further from the outpost, hadn’t managed to loot anything during this raid. During the previous wave, the Tiger-faced King had launched a surprise attack on the outpost, sweeping away all the supplies from the outer areas while the defenders were caught off guard.
By the time this neighbor, the Black Blade General, led his men in a second wave of attacks, the outpost was already fully prepared.
Had there been no support from the warplanes and warships in the sky, the Black Blade General could have easily captured the outpost and plundered enough supplies. Unfortunately, wave after wave of warplanes and warships had begun their assault on the mutants. The neighbor’s forces were momentarily stunned by the barrage, only to realize that the pirate battleships in the sky had vanished without a trace.
Outposts were never built near entrances to the underworld. It was a considerable distance to travel from the outpost back to an entrance. Across this very distance, the Black Blade General suffered heavy casualties as the warplanes chased right on their tails, relentlessly bombarding them.
Fortunately, the tall grass in the prairie provided some cover. Even so, the mutants piloting biological mechas sustained severe losses. There was no avoiding it—the biological mechas were massive, and their movements caused huge disturbances in the grass. The warplanes simply unleashed mindless, suppressive fire on those spots.
Left with no other choice, the Black Blade General ordered his subordinates to scatter and regroup at a designated location.
"These pirates have absolutely no credibility. Someday, when we go settle the score with them, we’ll take everything back with interest," the Black Blade General cursed while waiting in the wild grass. As his subordinates gradually gathered, their numbers swelled. It seemed the losses were much smaller than he had anticipated. Breathing a sigh of relief, he continued to swear.
"General, do you think we’ve been duped this time? We weren’t the ones who contacted the pirates. We offered up so many goods; there’s no way the pirates would just run off. Could someone in the middle have skimmed off our share?" one of his subordinates guessed.
"It’s possible. That son of a bitch, the Black Stone King. I’ll make trouble for him the moment we get back." Hearing this, the Black Blade General resolved to recoup some of their losses. Not only had they failed to loot any supplies this time, but they had also lost quite a few men and biological mechas.
"General, we’ll need to buy another batch of people from the Alliance side. We should ask our partners over there if they have anyone available. We’re already running short on manpower," another subordinate said.
"The main headquarters will figure out a way to send people over. Don’t worry about it."
"General. There are escape pods. Should we go take a look?"
"Forget it. Let’s head back first so I can settle the score with them. We handed over so many rare materials this time and got absolutely nothing in return. How can we let that slide?"
Just then, a mutant hurried over. "General, there’s a mecha heading this way along the mountain."
"What? Another son of a bitch dares to trespass on our territory?" the Black Blade General said angrily.
"General, this mecha seems to be manually piloted. There are unpiloted mechas discarded everywhere, clearly out of contact. Why don’t we capture this bastard and interrogate him?"
"Exactly! We have no idea what just happened, and we know absolutely nothing about the pirates’ situation. If you go to the Black Stone King now, they might just feed us a bunch of nonsense. Any news from the main headquarters will definitely be delayed. It’s already difficult for them to come here, and after an incident of this magnitude, we might not be able to contact them for two or three years," another subordinate added.
"Let’s go take a look." The Black Blade General nodded. He wondered what exactly had happened in space and why the pirate battleships had retreated.
He had only mobilized this time because the main headquarters had ordered him to do so. He never expected to suffer such heavy casualties.
From a distance, the Black Blade General spotted a mecha bounding along the ridge, leaping from one hilltop to another. Seeing this only fueled his rage.
"You son of a bitch, having fun hopping around, are you?" the Black Blade General gritted his teeth. He had suffered his greatest loss in history today, chased and battered by warplanes, left looking as pathetic as a beaten dog.
The sight of that mecha leaping between hilltops acted as a spark to a powder keg, igniting the furious inferno blazing in his heart.
However, at that exact moment, several warplanes roared past overhead. The Black Blade General and his men hastily ducked into hiding.
Back on Yang Bo’s side, he was halfway through his journey when he saw the warplanes roaring toward him. He had no idea which faction these warplanes belonged to.
There were four warplanes in total. Three stood guard, while one hovered just a few meters above the ground, several dozen meters away from him. A hatch on the warplane opened, and a person began waving their hand, shouting something.
"Ma’am?" Yang Bo was a bit bewildered.
"They’re here for me," the female officer replied.
Hearing this, Yang Bo quickly opened the mecha cockpit. The warplane pilot in the distance had originally intended to ask the mecha pilot if he had seen anyone else. But the moment the cockpit opened, a familiar figure abruptly leaped out.
The warplane pilot was stunned for a moment before jumping out of the aircraft in sheer excitement. Since they were all superpower users, a drop of seven or eight meters to the ground was nothing to them.
"Ma’am!" the warplane pilot said, hastily saluting as he looked at the female officer.
"Can you take one more person?" she asked, looking at the pilot.
"Ma’am, that’s against regulations. Our warship has already finished reassembling," the warplane pilot quickly replied. Personnel from different warships weren’t allowed to mix. Furthermore, the warship the stranger belonged to had just suffered an accident, and the situation was still unclear. Bringing a complete stranger aboard rashly was out of the question.
Yang Bo was ecstatic when he saw that the female officer was leaving. But when she offered to take him with her, he inwardly cursed her for being so meddlesome, even though he knew she had good intentions.
"Ma’am, you go on ahead. I’ll just head to the outpost," Yang Bo interjected upon hearing the pilot’s response. He hurriedly shut the mecha cockpit, fired up the mecha’s rocket backpack, and covered a distance of over a thousand meters in a single leap.
The warplane pilot was slightly dumbfounded. He wondered, "Young man, do you have any idea what you just missed out on?"
Watching the retreating figure of Yang Bo’s mecha, the female officer grew even more certain that this corporal was hiding something. However, now that her warship had reassembled, her absence as the captain meant there were many pressing issues she needed to resolve.
"Let’s go." The female officer leaped into the warplane. Once she returned to her warship, she would simply notify Yang Bo’s fleet to come and pick him up.
At the same time, she still harbored many doubts. He had gained authorization simply by repairing the mecha. If the mecha manufacturing company found out about this, wouldn’t they go absolutely crazy?
