Zhang Yuxi had previously learned the violin and piano, but her main focus had always been dance. While she was clueless about musical instruments, that didn't mean Zhao Lizhen was.
And so, Zhang Yuxi called Zhao Lizhen. "Mom, are you busy?"
"If you need something, just say it."
"It's about San Bao!"
Zhao Lizhen's tone immediately softened. "San Bao? Oh, what is it? Tell me everything."
Zhang Yuxi was speechless.
"Well," she began, "San Bao wants to learn the piano, drums, and violin, and we're here signing him up for classes. We're also planning to buy the instruments to take home, so I wanted to ask for your advice."
"Oh?" Zhao Lizhen said. "Which models are you looking at?"
After Zhang Yuxi explained, Zhao Lizhen commented, "Apart from being on the pricier side, the recommendations are all pretty good! Try to get the owner to lower the price a bit…"
Thinking of how her daughter was no good at bargaining, she added, "Hand the phone to the owner. I'll talk to him."
Zhang Yuxi passed her phone to the manager.
The man took the phone with a smile. "Oh, hello, ma'am…"
"Yes, that's right. Of course, I recommended the best equipment for them! It sounds like you know your stuff, ma'am."
"Oh, ma'am, that price is just too low. We have a business to run, you know."
"You know business hasn't been easy this year, and it's even harder for our line of work…"
"Come on, ma'am, let's talk this over. Can you come up a little on the price?"
"Alright, alright… yes, yes, that works…"
With that, the manager handed the phone back to Zhang Yuxi.
"I've settled on a price," Zhao Lizhen said. "I let him make a small profit…"
Finally, after they paid, the manager told them the delivery would arrive within half an hour.
When Lin Feng returned home, he and Zhang Yuxi began to tidy up San Bao's room. The room was spacious, more than enough for a piano and a drum kit. Plus, the soundproofing was excellent. Even if the music inside was deafening, it couldn't be heard from the outside.
After they finished tidying up, the manager arrived with the instruments. It took him and the other workers quite some effort to move everything up to San Bao's room on the second floor. The manager then bustled about, tuning the piano and assembling the drum kit.
After several hours of work, he sat on the floor and let out a sigh of relief.
Lin Feng brought him some fruit and snacks. "Thanks for all your hard work!"
"I'm no boss," the manager said with a laugh. "I'm just an employee, the store manager."
"Thank you!"
Classes would begin the next day, with San Bao learning three courses simultaneously. The lessons were scheduled from six to seven o'clock. As for the specific class arrangements, the three teachers would coordinate among themselves, so the parents didn't need to worry.
Once everything was installed, San Bao couldn't wait to try it all out, fiddling with the new instruments by himself in his room.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yuxi answered another call from Zhao Lizhen.
"We spent so much money, we need to see some results," Zhao Lizhen said. "Send me the teachers' profiles. I'm going to check if they're the real deal."
Zhang Yuxi sent the information over. Zhao Lizhen knew quite a few people in her circle, so it never hurt to ask around. Moreover, the initial teacher is crucial, as they set a foundation for the child's development. Once that's established, it's very difficult to change later.
"I'll call you back when I find something out."
"Thanks, Mom. That's a lot of trouble for you."
"What trouble? San Bao is my grandson!"
After she hung up, the matter was considered settled for the time being.
The next day, it was Teacher Cai's turn to give a lesson. Lin Feng prepared some fruit and snacks for them, then made himself scarce.
Past seven o'clock, Teacher Cai and San Bao came downstairs. Lin Feng was in the kitchen making dinner, while Zhang Yuxi and the other children were playing in the lounge area.
"Teacher Cai, thank you for your hard work," Zhang Yuxi offered. "Please stay and have dinner with us."
Teacher Cai politely declined. "There's no need. My family has already made dinner!"
"Since that's the case, I won't insist," Lin Feng said with a smile.
Teacher Cai said goodbye to San Bao. "I'll see you next lesson. Goodbye!"
"Goodbye, Teacher Cai. Thank you for today!" San Bao replied obediently.
"Go on and play," Lin Feng said with a laugh. "I'll see Teacher Cai out."
A moment later, Lin Feng returned. Zhang Yuxi met him in the kitchen and asked, "What did Teacher Cai say?"
Lin Feng spoke as he shredded celtuce, his hands never pausing. "Teacher Cai said our boy has a real talent for music. He has an incredible memory and understands things almost instantly."
"Really?" Zhang Yuxi asked, surprised.
Lin Feng smiled. "Those were her exact words. She also said that of all the students she's taught, San Bao is the most intelligent."
Zhang Yuxi was skeptical. "She's probably just being polite."
Lin Feng wasn't concerned. "As long as San Bao enjoys it, that's all that matters."
Before they knew it, August 28th arrived, and it was time to register for school. Having gone through registration before, and with everyone being in the same class, the children moving up a grade only needed to pay the fees, so there wasn't much paperwork.
On August 31st, a parent-teacher meeting was held.
"This term, we will start teaching the children numbers, basic phonics, and so on," Mr. Li announced. "This isn't too early. We will impart knowledge to the children through play."
Actually, Mr. Li knew that many parents in the class had already enrolled their children in various extracurricular classes. Even though the children were only four years old, many had no problem with addition and subtraction within fifty. They could also recognize quite a few written characters. Many parents, not wanting their children to be left behind, had already begun this early education, hoping their kids wouldn't lose at the starting line. At school, the teachers would normally only start teaching basic knowledge once the children reached the middle-grade class.
"We will need your cooperation during this learning period, so I'd like to thank all of you in advance."
The parent-teacher meeting ended, and formal classes were set to begin the next day.
On Mondays, everyone had to wear their school uniforms and carry their little backpacks. This year, their classroom had been moved to the second floor, leaving the first floor for the lower-grade class. The class schedule remained unchanged.
Lin Feng, accompanied by Zhang Yuxi, took the children to their first day of school, feeling somewhat emotional. In the blink of an eye, they had moved up to the middle-grade class. Soon it would be the upper-grade class, and then elementary school.
Time flies so fast...
