Mecha Devourer System

Chapter 186: Farther From Humanity (II)

CLICK

CLICK

CLICK

The sound of fingers clicking echoed out, coming from Sara, whose fingers clicked nervously against each other.

Her gaze remained buried at her feet, heads drooping low.

Staring silently, opposite was Everlearn, a steaming cup of coffee before him.

He had received the system's notification that it was free of poison, and he was still quite surprised.

He turned to her, taking a sip before saying:

"I wouldn't have done that."

"Huh?"

It was a word that finally brought her neck out of the table, her clicking fingers pausing, though a pink blush quickly spread out her cheeks.

"A guy covered in blood jumps through your window, clamps a hand over your mouth, clearly running from something and obviously a Corer, yet you still let him stay in your home, use your shower, and even serve him coffee."

He said, as the blush on her cheeks halted, a more focused expression appeared.

"That's not something I would have done."

He said, and she looked at his coffee, saying.

"I also wouldn't have stayed if I were you..."

"Huh,"

"I let you in the bath, and you spent about 30 minutes in there."

"That's enough to go down the building and call those who were after you, that you were hiding here."

"So, in a way...you were also too trusting."

She said, and this time it was Everlearn's turn to be surprised, his lips hanging.

The sight of his shock made her giggle, and he snapped out of it.

"That surprisingly never occurred to me until now."

"I bet jumping into a lady's room, covered in blood, also never occurred to you, then."

"At least, it never occurred to me I would allow a Corer close to me, talk less of having him in my house."

"We both just reacted reflexively to an unexpected situation, and here we are..." she said, her hand reaching for her coffee and taking a sip, obviously having regained her composure.

"Though I'm quite curious, how did you get blood on you?"

She said as he raised his coffee.

"Did you... kill someone?"

She asked, and his hands paused, but only for a moment, before he took another sip.

"I did."

He said.

BAAADUMP!

BAAADUMP!

The sound of her heartbeat spiraling within her rib cage was clearly heard by him, as he silently gazed at her surprised expression.

"You... you don't look like someone to do such an evil. I wonder why you would do that?" She whispered, and he remained quiet for a while before asking:

"Imagine you were a blacksmith, right?" He said, as she nodded.

"You helped someone forge a blade, the finest you had ever created, pouring all your skill into it."

"And then that same blade, wielded by the very person you made it for, ended your life."

He said, continuing

"Would you consider yourself having done an evil if you managed to become a ghost and kill your killer?"

He asked, and her brows furrowed before she responded.

"Even if I didn't become a ghost, I still would have wanted whoever killed me to face justice, too. So, yes." She responded, and Everlearn nodded.

"The one I killed was a Mass Murderer who was never put to justice due to backing. So, I put justice in my own hands. That's how I got that blood on me."

He said, his hands reaching for the coffee, but he paused when he found a hand over it.

He raised his head and saw her eyes fixed on his, filled with conviction.

"Life is a very precious gift. Unless absolutely necessary, and left with no choice, then please don't take such a beautiful thing away."

She said, and a deep silence stretched for about five seconds before she followed Everlearn's eyes, seeing him turn to her hand resting on his.

Quickly, she jerked her hand back, her face quickly reddening.

"I… I lost myself again," she said, covering her face with her hands.

She then noticed his silence and shifted a finger off her eyes, finding Everlearn, who had paused, his brows gently furrowed and eyes far away in thought.

"Hey, you okay?" She asked, and he finally snapped out of it.

"I'm fine." He said, taking a sip of the coffee.

She looked at him quietly for a while before her eyes trailed to his chest, and she pointed.

"You're a Corer, right?"

"Yes?"

"So, you really do have an energy core beating right by the side of your heart."

She said, and his brows furrowed.

"You seem to know quite a lot about Corers..." He said, and she nodded.

"My Dad was a Corer too." She said, and Everlearn paused.

"He... was?"

"Yes. He died in the Nak war many years ago."

"I...I'm sorry." He said, his expression turning downcast, and she shook his head.

"It's fine. It's been so long, so... I've already gotten over it."

She said with a smile.

"He must have been a hero." He said, and for the first time, she saw him smile.

A really bright smile, and it left her heart thumping louder.

For a moment, in Sara's eyes, his image overlapped, leaving her speechless, but only for a moment.

"Yes. He was." She said with a sweet smile.

"Do you..." he tried to say, but then paused.

"What?" She asked with interest.

"Never mind." He replied, but then paused when he felt the cold hands on his once more.

He looked at her, finding a pair of ruby-green eyes filled with conviction.

"I really want to know," Sara said, seriously, and Everlearn stayed quiet for a while before saying:

"Do you feel rage at his death?" He asked, and she paused.

"Rage?"

"Yes. Like this deep feeling of revenge towards his death."

"I do," she said,

"But there are millions like me who feel the same, and a lot more feeling that every day. Many Corers are lost to the Nakros war after all."

"I am just as helpless as the millions of others...so, my rage doesn't count for much then, does it?"
