Chapter 570 -579: Sober
Mr. Magnus and Stella Sterling understood what he was planning.
But neither of them said anything to stop him.
However, Stella Sterling looked at him and said, “You can leave, but not right now. You need to stay here for a while so we can observe you.”
‘He looks no different from a normal person now, but just in case, it’s best we observe him a little longer. We need to see if any abnormalities develop before we can be sure.’
Mr. Magnus nodded. “That’s right. You’re the first person we’ve managed to save, so we need you to cooperate by staying here for observation. We have to see if there are any abnormalities.”
Mr. Magnus paused for a moment before adding, “This is incredibly important. If it’s successful, we can save countless others. I’m sure you don’t want to see this tragedy happen to anyone else.”
The man thought for a moment, then nodded without objection.
‘He wasn’t planning on living anyway. If he could make some kind of contribution before he died, maybe it would lessen the guilt in his heart.’
Once the man agreed, Mr. Magnus had someone from Meridia Base lead him to a small room.
With only Mr. Magnus and Stella Sterling remaining, Mr. Magnus said, “If there are no issues with this man, then Chief Ford can be saved! All those people outside can be saved too!”
Excitement filled Mr. Magnus’s voice.
It was as if the gloom that had weighed on him for days had finally given way to a ray of sunshine.
The Chief’s condition had been worsening by the day. If it continued, his body wouldn’t hold out much longer, even if they didn’t have to put him down themselves.
Most importantly, some people in the base seemed to have grown suspicious and were constantly demanding to see the Chief.
However, he and a few other senior staff had managed to keep the matter under wraps, but they couldn’t stall for much longer.
‘I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. As long as we confirm that man shows no abnormalities, I can give the medicine to the Chief immediately. The Chief can be saved.’
‘My only worry now is that the Chief has been mutated for a long time. I don’t know if this dose will be effective for him.’
Stella Sterling nodded. She had done all she could. If the medicine didn’t work, there was nothing else she could do.
‘But since it brought that man back to his senses, it proves the medicine isn’t useless. Even if there are side effects, it’s still better than nothing at all.’
Something seemed to occur to Mr. Magnus. “Sterling, how much of that vine do you have left? Can you tell me its exact location? I’ll have people from Meridia Base go look for it.”
‘There’s enough to save the Chief, but with so many other mutated personnel outside, we’ll need a huge amount of this medicinal ingredient.’
‘From what Sterling said, she only brought a small amount back with her before. There probably isn’t much left.’
‘So the top priority now is to get more of it back here to produce the medicine.’
“There’s still some, but not much. I’ve taken people there before. Once I’m back at Caeluna Base, I’ll have someone guide your people from Meridia Base to go find it.”
Stella Sterling spoke, but her thoughts were elsewhere. ‘I only brought a section back to see if I could grow it in my space. I was hoping to use it as a weapon.’
‘The vine survived. Just now, in fact, I mentally commanded it to plant itself in that special plot of land.’
‘That plot can replicate anything planted in it. Soon, I’ll have plenty of these vines.’
‘But I can’t tell Mr. Magnus any of this. If I suddenly produced a large quantity of the vine, it would definitely raise suspicion.’
‘I’ll just let them go search for now. Once I’m back at Caeluna Base, I’ll start processing the supply I already have.’
“That’s even better!”
Mr. Magnus nodded happily. Having a guide from Caeluna Base would be a huge help. They wouldn’t have to search blindly through the mountains.
“By the way, is there any news about Gordon Ford?”
The thought of Gordon Ford made Stella Sterling ask suddenly. ‘I’ve been in seclusion for half a month, and Gordon Ford still isn’t back.’
At her words, Mr. Magnus’s good mood evaporated. He shook his head. “None.”
A situation like this had never happened before.
People from both Meridia Base and Crescentia Base were looking for him, but after all this time, there had still been no news of that Gordon Ford kid.
Mr. Magnus was worried sick, but he was helpless.
It wasn’t just Gordon Ford who was missing; that fellow Basil Xavier had also vanished.
Stella Sterling fell silent, saying nothing more.
「Another day passed.」
The rescued man remained completely normal, showing no adverse reactions.
Mr. Magnus then conducted a full-body examination and found the man’s system to be indistinguishable from a normal person’s. The virus was gone. He could finally relax.
He and Stella Sterling headed to the place where Chief Ford was being held.
Chief Ford was confined within a transparent glass enclosure, still unconscious.
In the preceding days, Mr. Magnus hadn’t found a cure for the virus, but he had developed a powerful sedative that could induce a long-term coma.
Given the Chief’s condition, he hadn’t dared let him wake up, so he could only keep injecting him with the sedative to keep him unconscious.
Now, he stood beside Chief Ford, holding the green medicine, and slowly injected it into the Chief’s body.
He then stopped the administration of the sedative that kept Chief Ford unconscious.
A short while later, Chief Ford woke up and began to stir.
His eyes were blood-red. The moment he awoke, he began to struggle violently, the iron chains CLANKING loudly.
Mr. Magnus’s expression changed. He and Stella Sterling took a few steps back. “How can this be? The medicine isn’t working on Chief Ford!”
‘When the other man took this medicine, he was already back to normal by the time he woke up.’
‘But look at the Chief now—he’s clearly still in his mutated state. He hasn’t returned to normal at all.’
Mr. Magnus was horrified and distraught. ‘If even this doesn’t work on the Chief, is there any hope left for him?’
Just then, Chief Ford snapped the iron chains binding him.
He shot to his feet and lunged at the two of them.
Stella Sterling pulled Mr. Magnus aside and prepared to step forward and subdue Chief Ford.
But before she could make a move, she saw the crimson in the charging Chief Ford’s eyes begin to fade. He came to a sudden halt before reaching them.
His bloodshot eyes slowly returned to normal as the crazed expression on his face vanished.
He shook his head, looking at Mr. Magnus and Stella Sterling in confusion. “Mr. Morton? Sterling? What are you two doing here?”
“Wait, what’s going on with me?”
